Potting your seeds

You're now ready to pot your seeds! Just follow the two simple steps below, and soon you'll be enjoying fresh, home-grown bouquets all summer long. We sow our seeds in our glass house at the beginning of March, ready for planting out in early May.

Step 1
Place the Coco Coir pellets in water and let them expand fully for 10 minutes. The Coco Coir comes with a net that doubles as a pot. We suggest placing them on a tray / tupperware tub to catch any excess water.

Step 2
Using a pencil or pen, make a small hole in your Coco Coir pellet about 1-2 cm deep. Drop in 1-2 seeds from your first packet, then gently cover them with the coir compost and press lightly to secure. Don’t forget to label each plant to ensure you can identify them as they grow.

Repeat this process for each seed type. We recommend planting 3-4 pellets of each seed type, depending on the size of your flower patch. Bear in mind that they will be spaced about 30cm apart from each other.

Place your seeds in a greenhouse or on a windowsill, and watch as germination begins within the next few weeks!

Maintaining your seedlings

Growing your own flowers is a true labour of love. While it might feel a bit daunting at first, we’ve gathered some helpful tips and tricks to guide you along the way.

Watering:
Keep an eye on the Coco Coir pellets and water them as soon as they start to dry out. Avoid letting the seedlings sit dry for too long, as this can harm the seeds. When watering, add small amounts frequently, the compost should be damp, not soaking — overwatering can cause the seeds to rot and encourage mould. If mould appears, remove it promptly and reduce the frequency of watering.

Sunlight:
Provide bright, indirect sunlight for about 4 hours a day. If you notice browning on the leaves, move the plants further away from the window / move to a different area of the greenhouse. Pale leaves, on the other hand, may indicate they need more sunlight.

Transplanting:
When your seedlings have grown 3-4 leaves and the risk of frost has passed (typically around May 1st), it’s time to plant them outside. You can place them in large pots, raised beds, or directly into well-fertilised ground. Dig a hole, and plant the pellet directly into the soil (you don’t need to remove the netting from the pellet).

Caring for & Cutting Your Flowers

Watering your flowers:
It’s important to keep your flowers well-hydrated. If the weather has been dry, make sure to water your plants every 2-3 days to keep them healthy and thriving. Consistent hydration helps ensure your flowers grow strong and vibrant, ready for cutting. Water at the base of the plant, not over the leaved and flowers. Once the flowers start coming in, you can add some fertiliser to your soil - your plant will generally tell you if it’s happy or not! We make our own fertiliser from comfrey.

Below, we’ve included some tips to help you cut your flowers the right way and keep them looking fresh for as long as possible.

Choosing Flowers to Cut:
Select flowers that are at least 75% open. To test if a flower is ready, gently tug on the lower petals—if they remain attached, it’s a perfect pick!

Blooming and Maintenance:
You can expect your flowers to bloom between the end of July and October (depending on the variety). To encourage continuous flowering, trim off any spent blooms just below the flower head. This will prompt the plant to produce new buds.

How to Cut:

  • Cut stems to a length of 30-50 cm, leaving about 1 inch above a leaf node to encourage new growth.

  • Make cuts at a 45-degree angle to maximise the stem’s surface area for water absorption.

  • Remove all lower leaves to help prevent stagnant water in your vase

Caring for Your Cut Flowers:

  • Refresh the water in your vase every 2-3 days.

  • Remove any wilting flowers promptly to keep the bouquet fresh.

With a little care, your blooms will brighten your space and bring joy for between 7-10 days. Congratulations on successfully growing your own flower-cutting garden!
